Vetbiobank has formulated a series of biotherapeutic products to address several complex equine pathologies.

Numerous illnesses in horses represent major medical challenges for the veterinarian’s classic therapeutic arsenal.

Where traditional laboraties come up short, Vetbiobank was able to develop innovative biotherapy methods for equines, simply by adapting therapeutic methods that were already in use in human medicine.

Today, more than 400-500 horses have been able to benefit from these therapies. Here are a few clinical situations :


  • A rapid and intense synovial inflammation starts out (synovitis), altering the synovial liquid’s composition which loses part of its lubrication qualities. The inflammatory state subsequently worsens and the cartilage starts wearing out.
  • Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are injected locally. Although the intravenous route is more convenient, no studies have shown the scientific soundness of this form of administration.
  • In the long term, the cells restore a chemical balance in the joint by secreting a series of factors that are anti-inflammatory and provascular, that modulate the immune response, and avoids cell death.
  • Residual and endogenous regeneration capacities (by anabolism) of the patient can subsequently take place in harmonious fashion to regenerate if needed the damaged cartilage. Clinical signs of pain and lameness improve on the long-term.



  • Often linked to hyperextension of the fetlock
  • Often involves the Superior Digital Flexor Tendon (SDFT)
  • 9-15 months of immobilization – Relapse in 50 to 90% of cases (because of the initial lesion or a secondary lesion adjacent to the first) in the following year.
  • Relapse often ends in horse retirement : the relapse risk needs to be lowered
  • Non-functional fibrosis systematically takes place (because of weak endogenous regenerative capacities), ending in scarring-tissue that is more rigid than the original one.
  • A rehabilitation program and shoeing are key to treatment success

MSC have an effect on two critical phases of tendinitis. First, they limit early-on the inflammation (if the cells were administered in a timely manner). Second, they allow damaged tissue to regenerate itself. Our OMBISTEM-Vet results


CSM use in bone fracture is peraphs the most developped field of clinical application in orthopaedic conditions in human. Numerous clinical trials, some in France and Europe, have demonstrated their efficacy in bone consolidation.

Vetbiobank has gathered a caseload serie of umbilical cord derived – MSC in equine bone fracture with an excellent consolidation process with horses resuming their career with a preserved level.


  • Laminitis can have different causes (metabolic, gestational…) and manifests itself by acute inflammation of the hoof.
  • MSC injected locally or locoregionally induce modulation of the immune response and lessen inflammation, subsequently allowing damaged tissue to regenerate itself.

Caution : This application has not yet been completely validated. Our arguments are based on results obtained by world-leading veterinary centers which were presented during conferences as well as our own experience in the matter, where most of our affected patients improved after treatment, even in sometimes extreme situations.
