Neonatal Stem Cells

Neonatal Stem Cells

There are several categories of stem cells, depending on the stage of development of the animal : embryonic, fetal, neonatal, perinatal and adult stem cells.

The neonatal stem cells used by Vetbiobank come from tissues collected at birth (placenta, umbilical cord) with the consent of the animal owners. These tissues are usually discarded as waste, or surgical residues in the case of caesarean sections. Vetbiobank has chosen this cell type also because it respects animal welfare. Indeed, unlike the methods used to obtain other types of cells, which generally require an invasive procedure on the donor animal, the collection of neonatal stem cells is performed without any intervention on the mother or newborn.

Less immunogenic,
greater anti inflammatory
potential than
adult stem cells

Because of their youth, the differentiation potential of neonatal stem cells is large and superior to that of adult cells, although still less than that of embryonic stem cells.

Neonatal stem cells are also known to be less immunogenic,i.e. they are less likely to trigger an immunological response in the treated animal than adult stem cells. Finally, they have a superior anti-inflammatory potential. 8, 9, 10, 15, 16, 17, 18

The manufacture of neonatal stem cells follows strict quality assurance and traceability rules. Because of their biological nature, their manufacture has a low environmental impact compared to a synthetic chemical molecule.

These cells can only be injected by a qualified veterinary practitioner who will have the know-how and skills to perform this procedure.
